Michael Organ MP

Greens Member for Cunningham

***** MEDIA RELEASE ***** 4 June 2004

US President George W Bush’s unprecedented attack on Opposition leader Mark Latham has more to do with Prime Minister John Howard’s flagging popularity in domestic opinion polls than the future of the occupation of Iraq or the ‘war on terror’, Cunningham MP Michael Organ said this afternoon.

“It is a measure of Howard’s increasing desperation for re-election that he should allow his ‘great and powerful friend’ to interfere in Australian domestic politics”, Mr. Organ said.

“The chain of events leading up to the Bush outburst strongly suggests that the US President’s remarks didn’t just come out of left field.”

“Our Prime Minister had breakfast with the man he refers to in our parliament as ‘the President’, and you can imagine the conversation between the two government leaders both facing mounting opposition to their re-election for yourself.”

“It’s you scratch my back and I’ll scratch yours, taking place on the global stage.”

“It’s the ‘nod and a wink’ school of politics, and John Howard should hang his head in shame”, Mr. Organ said.
