Bob Granger appointed new Chair of the Sugar Research and Development Corporation

Brisbane-based consultant and experienced horticulturist, Bob Granger, has been appointed the new Chair of the Sugar Research and Development Corporation (SRDC), the Parliamentary Secretary for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, Senator Judith Troeth announced today. His term expires in September 2005.

Senator Troeth said Mr Granger’s extensive horticultural background includes being the General Manager of Queensland Fruit and Vegetable Growers Limited — one of Australia’s leading grower organisations — from 1990 until 2001.

“He has also served in a variety of roles on behalf of the industry and in an advisory capacity for both the Queensland and Federal governments,” Senator Troeth said.

“Most recently, as the principal with a Brisbane-based consulting company, he has worked on a range of projects involving clients such as the Horticulture Australia Council and the Queensland Fisheries Service.

“The many high-profile roles Mr Granger has undertaken within the horticulture sector have also given him an excellent understanding of R&D, particularly its importance to industry security and profitability and I am confident the SRDC will benefit considerably from his insight and experience” the Senator said.

Senator Troeth said that the Australian sugar industry has been through particularly difficult times in recent years and will need to undergo further change if it is to secure its long-term viability and sustainability.

“An innovative and targeted R&D program will play an important role in this process and Mr Granger’s considerable experience will ensure he oversees this aspect of the industry’s development with distinction.”

“I congratulate Mr Granger on his appointment and I look forward to working with the Corporation to help ensure the sugar industry continues to be a significant export performer and an important contributor to the economic, social and environmental well-being of many regional communities.”

Senator Troeth also made special mention of retiring Chair, Clive Hildebrand who has served as Corporation Chair since 1995.

“Mr Hildebrand has made an outstanding contribution to the Australian sugar industry and I wish him all the best for the future.”
