North Korea test shows stupidity of PM Howard's nuclear push

North Korea's nuclear weapons test and the shifting and deteriorating global security situation demonstrate the stupidity of Prime Minister John Howard's push to expand Australia's role in the global nuclear fuel cycle, the Australian Greens said today.

"Ever since the Prime Minister gave his unqualified support to expanding uranium mining and entered into talks with US President George Bush about enriching uranium in Australia, the Greens have warned that the risk of nuclear proliferation is far greater than any profits to be gained," Greens energy spokesperson Senator Christine Milne said in Canberra.

"Labor and Liberal both support expanded uranium mining at a time when the US is saying North Korea can have nuclear weapons or it can have a future.

"Australia is playing a dangerous game as the threat of nuclear conflict and terrorist dirty bombs escalates.

"Prime Minister Howard should now do one of his famous U-turns and abandon his support for President Bush's global nuclear energy partnership, reject uranium sales to India and commit Australia to strengthening the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT)."
