Redeveloped Macksville Pool makes a splash

Australian Government Minister for Transport and Regional Services, Warren Truss, and Federal Member for Cowper, Luke Hartsuyker today officially opened the redevelopment of the Macksville Memorial Aquatic Centre which was made possible with $275,000 in funding from the Australian Government.

Mr Truss said the Australian Government funding has gone towards the replacement of existing amenities, kiosk/office space and crèche and the installation of a new hydrotherapy pool which has lift access.

“The redeveloped Aquatic Centre will provide the local community with new and improved recreational facilities and will allow many residents to take advantage of the health benefits offered by hydrotherapy,” he said.

Mr Hartsuyker said the new hydrotherapy pool will help to improve circulation, maintain muscle tone and help increase flexibility.

“I’m sure it will prove to be a very popular facility, especially for older people and people who have muscle problems or are recovering from injuries or operations,” he said.

Mr Truss said the refurbishment was funded under the Australian Government’s $69.4 million Regional Solutions program which has since been replaced by the Regional Partnerships program.

“The Regional Solutions program was established in 2000-01 to assist regional and rural communities to build their capacity to identify and implement development opportunities,” he said.

Mr Hartsuyker said this project is another example of the Australian Government working in partnership with local communities to build a stronger regional Australia.

“Besides the Australian Government’s contribution, the New South Wales Department of Tourism, Sport and Recreation, the Nambucca Shire Council and members of the local community have helped this project come to fruition. I would like to thank all of them, especially the locals, who contributed more than $65,000 towards this $1.5 million project,” he said.

Communities should contact their local Area Consultative Committee* if they wish to seek funding through the Regional Partnerships program.
