Medicare services at Launceston Centrelink

Launceston’s Centrelink Customer Service Centre can now offer Medicare services.

Federal Member for Bass Michael Ferguson said that the introduction of these services is part of a national trial aimed at improving customer service and choice.

“The trial aims to give customers more choice by offering the extra service at selected Centrelink offices,” he said.

“The Launceston Centrelink office has been chosen to test customer demand for these shared services, so it now means residents will only have to go into one office to do their Centrelink or Medicare business.

“Centrelink in the Northern Tasmanian region already services more than 51,000 customers who will benefit from this new initiative. The wider community may also find it more convenient to access Medicare services from the Centrelink office.”

Mr Ferguson said that from 9 November, people who visit the Launceston Centrelink office will be able access a range of non-cash Medicare services including claiming their rebate by EFT or cheque, enrolling or updating their personal details, registering as an organ donor or getting a copy of their child immunisation statement.

“Launceston Centrelink staff members will be joined by two Medicare staff for the duration of the six month trial,” he said.

“The results of the trial will help the Australian Government to understand the best mix of services offered in Centrelink and Medicare offices.

“It’s another example of how the Howard Government is addressing the needs of the Australian people by responding to customer demand and feedback.

“We are committed to making it simpler and easier for Australians to do business with us by providing greater flexibility, choice and convenience in accessing Human Services agencies.”
