NEW APEC GUIDELINES WILL HELP BOOST

AUSTRALIAN SEAFOOD EXPORTS

Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry Minister, Mark Vaile, said today tha t new APEC guidelines would provide Australian exporters with comprehensive information on preparing and shipping live and fresh fish and other seafood.

Mr Vaile said the Guidelines on Airshipment of Live and Fresh Fish and Seafood , which were devised by APEC’s Fisheries Working Group, provided tangible proof of the benefits APEC can deliver for business activity in the Asia-Pacific region.

“The guidelines will provide Australian exporters with significant new opportunities in the markets of the Asia-Pacific region,” he said.

The Fisheries Working Group is meeting with APEC’s Marine Resources Conservation Working Group in Cairns. Mr Vaile highlighted the significance of Cairns as the regional heart of the live reef fish trade in Australia saying it was an ideal location for the APEC working groups to meet.

“By hosting this meeting in Cairns, delegates from 14 of the 21 APEC member economies have an opportunity to experience the Great Barrier Reef first hand, attend an important workshop on aquaculture and discuss some of the issues affecting fisheries management and trade,” he said.

“Australia considers APEC an ideal forum for delivering practical outcomes for fisheries management and regional market access issues.

Copies of the Guidelines may be obtained from the APEC Secretariat web site at www.apecsec.org.sg or viewed on the US National Marine and Fisheries Service homepage at www.nmfs.gov/trade.
