Labor support for Ipswich Motorway upgrade

Labor’s Federal Shadow Minister for Infrastructure and Water has reconfirmed Labor’s opposition to the Goodna Bypass when he inspected the proposed Bypass site and met with concerned residents together with Labor candidate for Ryan, Ross Daniels.

Anthony Albanese visited the site where the proposed Bypass would cross Moggill Road and met with members of the Moggill Community Association, The Gap Community Association, and the Western Brisbane Bypass Action Group.

“No-one in Canberra has been able to explain why the Howard Government has adopted the Goodna Bypass option,” said Mr Albanese. “The upgrade of the Ipswich Motorway is a much better option, and that is what Labor will implement if we are elected this year.”

“Spending $2.3 billion when there is a better option costing $1.1 billion demonstrates the Howard Government could not be trusted to spend taxpayers’ money wisely and to objectively make important infrastructure decisions”, Mr Albanese said.

Labor Candidate Ross Daniels warned residents in the electorate to be careful of misinformation being spread about the Goodna Bypass.

“At recent information sessions about the Goodna Bypass, participants were being told that the Goodna Bypass will be built regardless of who is in power, and that is just not true,” he said. “The information that is being spread is a deliberate attempt to mislead voters.

“Labor Leader Kevin Rudd has unequivocally committed that Labor will not build the Goodna Bypass if elected at the next Federal Election, and I whole-heartedly support that. We have repeated our commitment many times.”

“Rejection of the Goodna Bypass is one of the key distinctions between Federal Labor and Federal Liberal candidates in this area, and it is vital that everyone understands that the Goodna Bypass will not be built if Labor is elected this year.”

“The way to stop the Goodna Bypass, and the only way to stop it, is to elect a Labor Government at the next Federal Election”, he said.

He urged residents who want to fight the Goodna Bypass to visit his website where there are several anti-Bypass resources. See, or email
