A new four-year national plan for the innovative website - HealthInsite, an Internet gateway to quality health information, was launched today by the Federal Government. Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Health and Ageing, Trish Worth, launched the new HealthInsite strategic plan on behalf of the Minister, Senator Kay Patterson. It was launched on the final day of E-Government Week, with the theme "Transforming health, education and culture."

"Since the site went live in April 2000, HealthInsite has established itself as a leader in providing easy access to quality health information for consumers, and ranks highly against other websites of its kind," Ms Worth said.

"It links more than 1200 users a day to a wealth of reliable information on the websites of some of Australia's most authoritative health organisations."

According to the new plan, the site will be expanded over the next four years to give consumers greater access to important information about medications and local health services.

The Federal Government combined forces with the Health Insurance Commission to showcase a range of e-health initiatives during the week including HealthInsite, HealthConnect, the Better Medication Management System, Aged Care eConnect, and Clinical IT in Aged Care.

"HealthInsite is an exciting e-health initiative designed to give all Australians a 'safe' place to look for quality health information online and it's absolutely free. Anyone can visit the website at ," Ms Worth said.

HealthInsite's Information Partners include some of Australia's most authoritative health organisations, from hospitals and health departments to non-government organisations and self-help groups. They include the National Heart Foundation, Nutrition Australia, the National Breast Cancer Centre, as well as a number of hospitals and health services in the states and territories.

E-government Week, a national event run by the National Office for the Information Economy (NOIE), showcases the achievements of Commonwealth Government departments and agencies in using new technologies for information provision, service delivery and administration.

Targeted at parliamentarians and their staff, the week will help raise awareness of the range of services available online and the benefits these services provide to clients, business and the Government.
