John Howard's Health Challenge Jenny Macklin - Shadow Minister for Health

Media Statement - 27 October 2001

John Howard needs to commit extra funds to public hospitals and dental care at tomorrow's Liberal Party Campaign Launch if he is to demonstrate he has a long-term solution to strengthen Medicare", Shadow Health Minister, Jenny Macklin, said today.

"Tens of thousands of people are waiting too long for elective surgery or for care in a hospital emergency department.

"Pensioners and low income people are waiting several years for affordable access to dental care.

"John Howard says he has done enough in health. He must be the only Australian who does not know the pressures our public hospitals are under.

"If John Howard fails to commit funds to our public hospitals tomorrow, he'll confirm he lacks a plan -other than a retirement plan.

"Only Labor has a comprehensive plan to rebuild our public hospitals and fix the health system."
