JULIA GILLARD M.P. Shadow Minister for Health Manager of Opposition Business

Labor welcomes the contribution of New Matilda to the health policy debate with the launch of A Health Policy for Australia: reclaiming universal health care, today.

Most importantly, New Matilda calls for a Federal Government with a vision for our health system.

“The current government has no vision when it comes to the health care of Australians,” John Menadue, Chair of New Matilda.

In contrast to the Howard Government and Tony Abbott, Federal Labor has a vision for our health system.

Labor understands that our health system requires major reform to ensure we have the health system Australia needs for the 21st century.

Labor is committed to addressing the structural issues which affect sustainability, affordability, equity and quality of all health care delivery, public and private, in the medium and long term.

New Matilda has correctly identified a significant void caused by the absence of the Howard Government in this crucial debate.

According to Tony Abbott, “this Government does not believe in fundamental reform of our health system”.

Tony Abbott has no vision for our health system, just a list of quick political fixes and ideological obsessions that are undermining our universal health care system.

It is clear that only Labor is interested in building a health system for the future of all Australians.
