Mark Vaile Caught Out In Attempt To Rewrite History

Laurie Brereton - Shadow Minister For Foreign Affairs

Media Statement - 23 March 2000

Mark Vaile is most untruthful when he asserts that Bob Horne and Labor opposed every effort to get the Commonwealth involved in the upgrading of the Pacific Highway (Manning River Times, 23 March 2000).

Mr Vaile knows full well that the current upgrade is being carried out under the Commonwealth/State agreement negotiated by myself as Federal Transport Minister and the then New South Wales Roads Minister, Michael Knight.

In our joint press release dated January 25, 1996, committing Commonwealth and State governments to this work, special mention was made of Bob Horne's strong lobbying, a factor instrumental in our decision to commit the $1.5 billion over ten years.

Mr Vaile does himself no credit in his pathetic attempt to rewrite the history of this vital project.
