Only a few days remain for the Howard Government to exercise its power to rule out the exportation of Sunrise field gas from a floating facility.

The Sunrise venture partners are expected to announce soon, the findings of their review of Greater Sunrise gas options. Prior to the review, the partners maintained that piping gas to Darwin and on to the southeast market was not commercially viable.

Greater Sunrise is the only Timor Sea field with sufficient gas to both enhance competition in the southeast market and fuel the industrial development of northern Australia.

The Howard Government stands condemned for its inaction on the Sunrise gas issue. If the Government is not prepared to become sufficiently active at the eleventh hour to ensure Sunrise gas comes on-shore, it should move to guarantee the retention of the resource until such time that the market for domestic gas is sufficiently large to accommodate the domestic gas option.

The national interest demands it.
