CITIZEN COSTELLO NEEDS TO

SHOW HE’S GOT SOME GUTS ON

THE REPUBLIC

“Unless Peter Costello leads from the front on behalf of conservative republicans in the lead-up to the 6 November referendum, the referendum will fail”, Mr Rudd, the Federal member for Griffith, said on Monday.

“Peter Costello knows that referenda in this country only succeed when the electorate has clear evidence of bi-partisan support.

“Peter Costello also knows that he is the only Liberal in the country with a public profile capable of carrying the cause for conservative republicans - particularly given the position of the Prime Minister.

“Costello therefore has no principled alternative other than to rise to the occasion on this issue and demonstrate genuine national leadership.

“If he does) history will treat him well. If he fails to do so, he fundamentally disqualifies himself from the leadership of his party and the country.

“This is not the time for Mr Costello to play cute political games of fence sitting while his monarchist colleagues rampage around the country.

“A century ago the father of Liberalism, Alfred Deakin, demonstrated genuine leadership in the face of enormous conservative opposition within his own party and beyond on the proposal for a federated Australia.

“Costello’s challenge is to emulate Deakin’s leadership notwithstanding the complexities which he faces on his side of politics.

“If this referendum is lost, as a Member of Parliament of the same age as Mr Costello, I find it a comprehensive absurdity that he and I could be contemplating the possibility in the twenty-first century of swearing allegiance to King Charles III and his heirs and successors.”
