VA 22 October 2007

Minister for Veterans’ Affairs Bruce Billson today announced that a re-elected Howard Government will provide $50,000 to the Bendigo District RSL to assist with the development of a remembrance wall and walkway to honour the service and sacrifice of the region’s military units.

The memorial wall and walkway will complement the RSL Memorial Hall off Pall Mall and paving and landscaping to the forecourt. The remembrance area is expected to become a focal point for commemorative activities, including important anniversaries.

The City of Greater Bendigo has allocated $630,000 towards the project and Bendigo RSL was keen to provide a co-contribution of $50,000 to support its completion. The memorial is designed to recognise the contribution of Army, Navy and Air Force units raised or associated with Bendigo.

“This wonderful project was highlighted to me when I visited Bendigo on Vietnam Veterans’ Day back on August 18 at the invitation of the Liberal Candidate for Bendigo, Peter Kennedy,” Mr Billson said.

“Since my visit, Peter Kennedy has lobbied strongly for Howard Government funding support for what is an extremely important commemorative project for Bendigo. The RSL and Mr Kennedy also discussed the project with the Parliamentary Secretary for Defence Peter Lindsay during his recent visit to Bendigo.

“I am pleased to say that Peter Kennedy’s advocacy and the RSL and council’s commitment to the project have paid off and as a result, a re-elected Howard Government will provide $50,000 towards the project’s completion,” Mr Billson said.

“Peter Kennedy is to be commended for the strong interest he has shown in veterans’ issues and his advocacy for the Bendigo veterans’ community has been welcomed locally as a breath of fresh air.”
