Mabo: Ten Years on.

The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Commission has designed a special website to mark the tenth anniversary of the High Court’s Mabo decision.

It contains a host of material pertinent to the decision and the native title regime which flowed from it.

It also contains a link to Recognition, Rights and Reform, the landmark report prepared by ATSIC in response to the Mabo decision which emphasised the need to move away from welfare dependency when it was released seven years ago......well before it became a vogue subject in mainstream media.

The report set out a broad reform agenda for Indigenous Affairs, including constitutional recognition, regional autonomy, the negotiation of a Treaty or comparable document, compensation, improved service delivery, recognition of the social and cultural diversity of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, protection of rights and opportunities for economic development.

It has never been actioned by Federal Government's.

The site also contains articles on Mabo: Ten years On and an interview with James Rice, one of the surviving Mabo claimants.

It is a particularly useful resource for students looking at developments in Indigenous Affairs.

The site can be found at
