Upgrade Planned At Amberley RAAF Base To House Super Hornet Fleet

The Rudd Government plans to spend more than $117.1 million to extend and modify the facilities at Amberley RAAF Base to house the F/A-18 F Super Hornets, announced Parliamentary Secretary for Defence Support, the Hon Dr Mike Kelly AM MP.

“Subject to parliamentary approval, construction will commence in early 2009 and be completed in late 2010,” said Dr Kelly.

The RAAF Base at Amberley is currently the home base for the No.82 Wing’s F-111 aircraft fleet, operated by No.1 Squadron and No.6 Squadron.

From 2010, No.82 Wing will transition from F-111 operations to F/A-18 F operations and the existing facilities will require modification, extension or reconstruction to support the new Super Hornet platform.

“This project will deliver the necessary facilities and infrastructure to support No. 82 Wing operations at RAAF Base Amberley for a minimum 10-year period from 2010,” said Dr Kelly.

“Locals in Blair are looking forward to welcoming the new Super Hornets to Amberley,” said Shayne Neumann MP, Federal Member for Blair.

“The local community is very supportive of our Defence families and personnel, and we’re looking forward to more investment in the Base to build the Australian Super Hornet Facilities Project.

“I’m sure, like the F-111s, the people of Ipswich and West Moreton will welcome the Super Hornets into their community,” said Mr Neumann.
