LEADER OF THE OPPOSITION

STATEMENT BY THE LEADER OF THE OPPOSITON THE HON SIMON CREAN MP

Carole and I express our deepest sympathies to the Queen and her family on the death this morning of the Queen Mother.

The Queen Mother was a deeply loved and admired figure whose courage during the blitz when she refused to leave her home inspired the world during one of its darkest hours.

Her life spanned the entire history of our federation and she played an important role in our history when she joined her husband, the then Duke of York and future King George VI at the opening of Parliament House in 1927.

Her passing will be mourned by Australians who admired her grace and sense of duty, despite spending half her life as a widow after the tragic early death of her husband.

The death of the Queen Mother, coming so soon after the loss of Princess Margaret, is a double tragedy for the Queen in what should have been a year of great celebration marking her 50th anniversary on the throne and our thoughts today go out to Her Majesty and her family at this deeply distressing time.
