2005 New Apprentice Employer Awards 4 February, 2005

Minister for Vocational and Technical Education, Gary Hardgrave, has today opened nominations for the 2005 Minister’s Awards for Excellence - Employers of New Apprentices.

“These important awards recognise and reward employers of New Apprentices across Australia. The awards are a great way to thank these outstanding employers for their efforts and contribution,” Mr Hardgrave said.

“The Government is committed to helping those who are providing opportunities for the 70% of young Australians who don’t go directly from school to university.

“In the 2004/05 financial year, the Government is spending $725.5 million on New Apprenticeships, and a further $1.06 billion has been announced for initiatives aimed at increasing skill development in key trades.

“New Apprenticeships commencements in trades and related occupations have increased by 18%, with an estimated 66,900 commencements in the 12 months to 30 June 2004,” Mr Hardgrave noted.

Mr Hardgrave said the Howard Government was determined to ensuring trade qualifications were as valued as those qualifications achieved through university and the New Apprentice Employer Awards was another avenue to raise the profile of trade qualifications.

“It is important that industry plays a leadership role in determining arrangements for the provision of training and skills development.”

“I look forward to rewarding those employers of New Apprentices who have shown the foresight and dedication in giving their New Apprentices such a great start on the road to personal success,” Mr Hardgrave concluded.

Nominations close on 18th March. For more information or to obtain an Award’s application form, visit or call 1800 639 629.
