Senator Judith Troeth, Senator for Victoria, was presented with a 2006 Edna Ryan Award, under the Government category, in a ceremony presented by the Women’s Electoral Lobby Victoria.

The Ednas are awards made to women whose activity and action advances the status of women in the community.

Convenor, Kerry Lovering, of the Women’s Electoral Lobby Victoria presented the award to Senator Troeth.

Senator Troeth along with three fellow Senators moved a bill in the Australian Parliament earlier this year to amend the Therapeutic Goods Administration Act and put the power of approval of the drug RU486 in the hands of the Therapeutic Goods Administration, a scientific department of the Department of Health and Ageing.

“I am honoured to accept this award”, Senator Troeth said at the ceremony.

“I am proud to have made a positive contribution towards women’s rights. I believe women should be able to take responsibility for managing their own fertility”, Senator Troeth said.

The WEL Edna Ryan Awards celebrate the life and achievements of Edna Ryan (1904-1997) who worked towards making a better world, especially for women.
