Hon. Warren E Truss, MP

Minister for Community Services

14 December 1998

The Federal Minister for Community Services, Warren Truss, has today announced an extra $53,997 for the Playgroup Association of Western Australia.

The funding will be allocated as grants for a number of playgroup projects.

Mr Truss said the grants will help more people join an existing playgroup or start a new one. It will also contribute to improvements in the quality of care and assist playgroups to provide programs appropriate to particular needs of their members.

"The Federal Coalition Government is committed to increasing awareness and access to playgroups for families across Australia," Mr Truss said.

"These grants to Western Australia represent part of the Federal Government's ongoing support.

"Playgroups are important because they help children develop socially and give their carers the opportunity to meet with other families in the community and to foster important support networks."

The funding will supplement activities to:

  • develop and distribute a manual to assist groups to organise and operate quality playgroups;
  • recruit and train bi-lingual playgroup workers to promote participation in playgroups by families from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds;
  • research the need for playgroups for Indigenous families and set up a trial playgroup for Indigenous children;
  • de velop a register of non-Association playgroup members so that they can be made aware of Playgroup Association services and membership benefits; and
  • compile a register of appropriate playgroup venues, especially in metropolitan areas.

"These activities w
ill provide substantial benefits for Western Australian families, in particular for those living in communities with special playgroup needs," Mr Truss said.

Families can find out more information about playgroups by calling the Playgroup Association on (08) 9228 8088.
