South Australian women urged to export.

The Parliamentary Secretary to the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade, De-Anne Kelly is urging South Australian women in business to consider exporting. The call comes as a new survey reveals one in five females are now assuming senior roles in business.

“The new DHL Women in Export survey reinforces Austrade’s drive to ensure women are provided with skills and information to achieve global export success,” Mrs Kelly said.

“To help women to succeed in exporting, Austrade, the Australian Government’s export promotion agency runs its Women in Export program and will hold a seminar in Adelaide on Tuesday, 30 May.

“The Women in Export seminar will provide an avenue for women to address their critical information gaps and barriers and provide answers and access to export advisers to improve the speed in which they achieve international business success,” she said.

An example of an excellent SA export success is Ferguson Australia Pty Ltd & Ferguson Fisheries Pty Ltd, exporters of high end seafood products like lobster medallions, lobster oil and glazes. Ferguson’s Director, International Marketing, Debra Ferguson said exporting accounts for 70 per cent of their business.

“I believe women can be very successful in the export arena. Increasingly women around the world are becoming involved in the negotiations between suppliers and customers, and can often relate and communicate together more effectively. Women are often leaders within their own company, especially in the marketing side of things, so it only makes sense that these skills are utilised in the export market,” Ms Ferguson said.

Managing Director of SA-based extra virgin olive oil producer, Longridge, Lisa Rowntree said exporting is fundamental to their success and their aim is for exports to account for 50 per cent plus of all sales.

“If you have a product that can’t compete with others domestically, try exporting. Australia is so small, getting into exporting opens up a whole world of possibilities. Women are great negotiators and sometimes they underestimate this ability,” Ms Rowntree said.

The DHL survey of exporters conducted by express and logistics giant DHL reveals seven per cent of businesses in South Australia and the Northern Territory employ female CEOs. In comparison, there is 28 per cent of businesses in Queensland, 15 per cent in Western Australia, 12 per cent in NSW and the ACT and 11 per cent of businesses in Victoria and Tasmania.
