ABARE Figures Prove Government Must Act on Climate Change

Figures released today by the Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics (ABARE) demonstrate that the failure to act on climate change, and to better manage precious water resources continues to cost the government and the public.

"With winter crop production down by 62 per cent and sustained drought conditions set to devastate summer crops, continued inaction on climate change is irresponsible," Democrats Agriculture Spokesperson, Senator Bartlett said.

"We need to face the reality that things are not going to get better, with dire predictions that rainfall will reduce by between 15-30 per cent as a result of climate change.

"Our agricultural sector, regional and rural communities and our economy are hurting now.

"The Government must invest its budget surplus to secure Australia's future against the adverse impacts of climate change.

"The Government should cease propping up the agricultural sector with drought relief measures and start implementing sustainable long term solutions that will really assist farmers, the public and the environment.

"Essential actions that can be taken now include introducing a much needed carbon price signal and investment in better, more secure water infrastructure.

"Australians can't wait any longer for the Government to get with the program and act to implement sustainable and effective climate change solutions," Senator Bartlett concluded.
