Michael Organ MP Greens Member for Cunningham

13 August 2004

The US/Australia Free Trade Agreement was a gigantic con job, Cunningham MP Michael Organ told the National Parliament as the deal passed the House of Representatives this afternoon.

“In dividing the house with my three cross bench colleagues, I reminded Howard and Latham that the ALP’s so called protections of the PBS were manifestly inadequate and that this deal puts manufacturing jobs in the Illawarra and Australia at risk, ” Michael Organ said.

“There has never been an independent assessment of the FTA- so Australia is flying blind right into a deal with the biggest economy on the planet. It could be a disaster.”

“The FTA is a dud deal rushed through to suit the electoral timetable of the Prime Minister and to repair the Leader of the Opposition’s standing with the White House.”

“The people in my electorate of Cunningham stretching from Helensburgh to Wollongong on the South coast of New South Wales as well as all Australians, deserve better than this.”

“As a bare minimum, we need a full and transparent assessment of the FTA’s impact upon the PBS, done by Australian public servants, not to mention the scores of other issues that the deal encroaches upon.”

“The ALP is wrong, the Government doesn’t care and everyone knows it,” Michael Organ said.

“I will not join this conga line of consent with the US,” Michael Organ said.
