Senator Lyn Allison Australian Democrats Energy Spokesperson

24 July ‘01 MEDIA RELEASE 01/428

Deal struck for a new age The conquering of the international climate change impasse of the last few days’ signals a new age of progress for the environment and the economy, according to the Australian Democrats Energy Spokesperson, Senator Lyn Allison.

Senator Allison said she was pleased that a deal had been struck in Bonn as it was important for the global community to move forward on climate change with or without the US.

"The United States is now clearly isolated and it has been dropped into the global warming ‘sin bin’,” Senator Allison said.

“The US must eventually be brought into line and understand, as most other countries do, that greenhouse emissions must be reduced by 70% by the end of the century. This is the bottom line.”

“Opportunities will now spring up for Australians out of the inevitable shift away from fossil fuels to renewable industries and clean economy jobs.”

“We are disappointed that the Federal Government did not announce an intention to ratify at Bonn. We are also concerned that nuclear energy is still on the agenda and the matter of sinks is still not resolved but it is reassuring that Australia will not be joining the US in avoiding its commitments,” Senator Allison concluded.
