CLEAN-UP TO BEGIN AT HMAS PLATYPUS SITE

I am pleased to announce that Defence will provide $20 million this financial year to kick start the clean-up of the former submarine base in Sydney known as the HMAS Platypus site.

Subject to the finalisation of formal agreement on remediation of the site between the two parties, a further payment of $20 million will be paid by Defence to the Trust next financial year, with the remainder of the cost of remediation to be met by Defence in following years.

Defence is committed to fully funding the remediation of the site and is working with the Sydney Harbour Federation Trust to finalise the remaining administrative ‘loose ends’ so that the contamination remediation project can go ahead.

Both the Government and the Sydney Harbour Federation Trust are committed to ensuring that the onsite contaminants are remediated in accordance with the proposed future use of the site.

The Sydney Harbour Federation Trust has completed its community consultation program and has developed a plan for the remediation.

Once the clean-up is complete, the public will have access to the site and it will be managed by the Sydney Harbour Federation Trust on a day-to-day basis.

I commend the efforts of the Member for North Sydney, the Hon Joe Hockey, who has worked tirelessly with the Sydney Harbour Federation Trust and the local community to ensure this successful outcome.
