It is with great pleasure that I congratulate Professor Barry Marshall and Dr Robin Warren on being named as the 2005 recipients of the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.

Their work in discovering the Helicobacter pylori, and specifically its effects on the duodenum and stomach is of immense practical significance.

Their ground-breaking discovery has led the wider medical community to better understand peptic ulcer disease, in turn providing practical relief for sufferers throughout the world.

As a consequence of the inspired hard work of Professor Marshall and Dr Warren, this condition is no longer considered a debilitating and chronic disease.

Those spared debilitating pain can thank Professor Marshall and Dr Warren for not only their work on the Helicobacter pylori, but also for careers that have been devoted to helping their fellow human beings.

All Australians can be very proud of what they have achieved.
