Australian delegation to attend the third International Congress for Rural Women in Spain

The Commonwealth Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry - Australia (AFFA) will coordinate an Australian delegation to attend the 3rd International Congress for Rural Women in Spain this October, the Parliamentary Secretary for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, Senator Judith Troeth, said today.

Senator Troeth said the Congress will be held from 2-4 October 2002 in Madrid and would cover issues such as sustainable development and food safety; women’s role in agriculture and rural development; leadership and the participation of rural women; and public policies to increase participation rates of women in industry.

“Having recently taken on portfolio responsibility for rural women, I am thrilled to be involved in such a wonderful initiative. I am certain their experience in Congress will prove to be immensely beneficial to this group of women who already play a significant role in shaping our agricultural industries and contributing to our rural communities,” Senator Troeth said.

“Australia has played a pivotal role in this forum in the past. In 1994 we hosted the first International Conference for Agricultural Women in Melbourne, and played a key leadership role at the second International Congress in 1997 at Washington.

“To support a professional and business-focussed Australian presence in Madrid, AFFA will coordinate the preparation and briefing of the delegation. AFFA has funded the appointment of a coordinator to oversee and coordinate activities associated with the delegation.”

Relevant Commonwealth Agencies will also contribute to the coordination of the delegation by providing information. This will be distributed to all delegates attending the Congress.

Members of the delegation will include the national rural women’s non-government organisations (NGOs) in addition to relevant Commonwealth Agencies. Senator Troeth today invited relevant State Agencies to join the delegation to ensure a national perspective, truly representative of Australian rural women and rural industries.

“AFFA has a strong relationship with the four national rural women’s NGOs and has invited these groups to join this delegation. The organisations are the Country Women’s Association of Australia, Australian Women in Agriculture, the Foundation for Australian Agricultural Women and the Women’s Industry Network - Seafood Community,” Senator Troeth said

“Members of the delegation anticipate approximately 100 Australian rural women will also participate in the Congress,” she said.
