Howard's Leadership Mires Response to Racism - Brown

12th Dec 05

The Prime Minister, whose infamous 'we will decide who comes to this country' translated for some to 'we will decide who comes to this beach' on Sunday, has mired the issue of racism in Australia, Greens Senator Bob Brown said today.

"This is the Prime Minister who took 5 months to criticise Pauline Hanson's first speech" Senator Brown said. "Mr Howard is very slow to call a racist spade a racist spade. He has taken Australia backwards from the last half century which celebrated

multiculturalism in our nation".

"Yesterday's racist attacks were just that," Senator Brown said. "The violence is criminal and the sentiment behind it unthreads the nation's fabric. Australia, needed a more direct repudiation, from

the Prime Minister not just of the violence, but of the racism which stirred it," Senator Brown said.

“The New South Wales police are to be praised for their role in preventing a much uglier outcome. Sadly, this episode is damaging Australia's reputation around the world," Senator Brown said.
