WA scores three players in ATSIC vs PMs XI cricket match

1 March 2002

“I extend my congratulations to the cricket team members who have been selected from Western Australia to play for the ATSIC Chairman’s XI in the ATSIC vs PM’s XI match in Canberra next week, Friday March 8.

Troy Collard and Clinton and Timothy Dann are talented cricketers and excellent role models for young Aboriginal people.

Mr Collard is currently playing first grade for Perth Cricket Club (PCC) and has taken 25 wickets this year. Last year he won the PCC bowling average/aggregate, taking 40 wickets in second grade.

Clinton Dann was an opening batsman at last year’s ATSIC Chairman’s XI, scoring 87 not out for the ATSIC side and receiving the Player of the Match title. Clinton was also a member of the PM’s XI against New Zealand in December last year and trained with the Western Warriors Pura Cup squad this year.

His brother, Timothy Dann, played for the PM’s side in last year’s match, scoring a solid 74 runs. Timothy currently plays A grade cricket for Bassendean Cricket Club in Perth and this year has an aggregate of 480 runs, averaging 62 runs.

Last year, the ATSIC Chairman’s XI side won the match and received the coveted Johnny Mullagh trophy, named after the star of the first Australian team (an all-Aboriginal side) to tour England during 1868.

This year, one of the world’s best one-day international cricketers, Michael Bevan, will lead the Prime Minister’s XI in the rematch against the ATSIC Chairman’s XI.

Aboriginal batsman Matthew Bradley will lead the ATSIC Chairman’s XI.

The good-humoured match sees the very best of Australia’s international players pitted against Australia’s most outstanding Aboriginal players. It is an excellent initiative and an important symbol for reconciliation. I look forward to next week’s match.”
