Media Release DavidHawkerMP Federal Member for Wannon

10 March 2004

An information kit to help people avoid identity theft has been welcomed by Member for Wannon - David Hawker.

The kit, called How to Prevent and Respond to Identity Theft, has been funded by the Australian Government through the National Crime Prevention Programme.

Mr. Hawker said today identity theft happened when personal identifying information like PIN numbers was stolen and used to gain advantages through various avenues including deception, electronic swindling and acts of terrorism.

“Skimming of credit or EFTPOS cards, where information on the magnetic strip is copied, is just one area of concern,” Mr. Hawker said.

“I am sure this kit will help people in the region avoid the dangers of identity theft and the years often spent recovering their identity.

“Identity theft is already costing Australians $1.1 billion a year and this figure is going up rapidly both in Australia and overseas.

Mr. Hawker said there were a number of simple steps people could take to protect against identity theft including destroying old identifying information, using a separate bank account with a low credit limit for internet transactions and taking care when giving out personal information over the phone or internet.

The kit, which is part of a much wider strategy to reduce identity fraud across the country, is available by phoning 1800 708 777, online at or from Mr. Hawker’s Gray St Hamilton electorate office.
