Media Release The Hon Fran Bailey, MP

28 January 2005

Tourism Australia’s international tourism marketing efforts have been recognised with major awards in the UK and the US.

Minister for Small Business and Tourism, Fran Bailey, said these latest awards highlight the outstanding work of Tourism Australia and the excellent working relationship it shares with the international travel industry.

“Tourism Australia is working hard to sell Australia to the world,” Fran Bailey said.

In the UK, Tourism Australia won the 'Best Tourist Board (UK Office)' award in the 'Travel Weekly Globe Awards' which are voted by readers and members of the travel industry.

This award is the latest in a string of awards that Tourism Australia has won in the UK including the Travel Trade Gazette Award for Best Tourist Board and Selling Long Haul’s Best UK based Tourist Office Promoting Australasia (Pacific region).

In the US, Australia won 'Best Destination- Pacific' in the 'Travel Weekly Annual Readers Choice Awards', which are voted by the travel industry and travel agents.

“The awards are testament to the renewed and vigorous international marketing activities pursued by Tourism Australia and recognition of the outstanding Brand Australia campaign that was relaunched in May 2004,” Fran Bailey said.

The Destination Australia Partnership in Europe that strategically aligns the marketing efforts of Tourism Australia and its State and Territory counterparts and the Aussie Specialists Program that provides agents with the training, resources and knowledge they need to sell Australia with confidence are two initiatives that have contributed to Tourism Australia's success.

“It is fantastic to have received recognition from the travel industry in important markets such as the USA and the UK and I acknowledge the work of our Tourism Australia staff, led by Judy Watkins in the UK and Michael Londregan in the US that have contributed so much to these results,” Fran Bailey said.

“In a highly competitive market place, it is the first time that a National Tourist Organisation has won both the Travel Weekly and Travel Trade Gazette awards. This is an outstanding achievement.”

In 2005 Tourism Australia will continue rolling out Brand Australia advertisements in key markets and working closely with the tourism industry. CMR05-026
