Wayne Swan MP Federal Labor Shadow Treasurer

10 November 2005

Tony Abbot’s gaffe in Parliament today suggests he may know something we don’t.

When answering a question in the House of Representatives, Minister Abbott referred to Malcolm Turnbull as ‘the Treasurer’.

While we are all aware of the Member for Wentworth’s ambitions for Peter Costello’s job, this announcement may have still come as a surprise to the current Treasurer.

Divisions in the Howard Government distract them from the economic policies Australia needs to secure our future prosperity.

The tax debate in this country, in particular, has been hijacked by the petty personal ambitions of Peter Costello and Malcolm Turnbull.

Australia needs a Government and a Treasurer with a broad and forward-looking economic agenda to lift productivity and deliver growth.

We need a Treasurer with a genuine interest in fairness, incentive and competitiveness in the tax system.

Given Peter Costello’s recent performance it’s little wonder senior Coalition figures are contemplating a change.
