The Shadow Minister for Foreign Affairs, Laurie Brereton, today deplored the conviction and sentencing on sexual offence charges of former Malaysian Deputy Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.

"Like all committed to due legal process, Labor has watched the legal proceedings against Anwar Ibrahim unfold with deep concern", Mr Brereton said.

"Very strong reservations have been expressed by numerous legal observers about the adequacy, fairness and independence of the processes involved in reaching this verdict."

"Friends of Malaysia can only be profoundly saddened by the injustice that has befallen Anwar and by the damage these proceedings have inflicted upon Malaysia's international standing."
