MEDIA RELEASE The Hon Joe Hockey MP Minister for Small Business and Tourism

13 March 2002 "02/036

The Minister for Small Business and Tourism, Joe Hockey, today called on airport workers that will walk off the job today, to put the tourism industry ahead of their own self interest.

The Minister’s call comes amid a four-hour stop work meeting today by airport workers at Melbourne, Essendon and Moorabin airports.

The Australian Industrial Relations Commission has strongly recommended that the workers cancel this industrial action

"This stop-work meeting will not only shut down flights into and out of Melbourne, but affect services across all states and territories," the Minister said.

"It comes at a time when Australian tourism is extremely fragile and is getting back on its feet.

"We’ve just had the demise of Ansett, and the last thing the tourism industry needs now is a strike.

"I call on Melbourne airport workers thinking of industrial action to show some restraint and put the tourism industry ahead of their own self interest."
