More Jobs For SA Rail Industry

The South Australian rail industry will receive a major boost as a result of an agreement between the Australian and New South Wales Governments to give the SA based Australian Rail Track Corporation (ARTC) a 60 year lease over NSW rail lines.

The lease will result in the ARTC taking over responsibility for the management and operation of the interstate and Hunter Valley rail lines in NSW.

SA Senator and Minister for Finance, Nick Minchin, who is the joint Australian Government shareholder in ARTC, welcomed today’s announcement by ARTC that it will expand its workforce in South Australia and retain its corporate head office in Adelaide.

“This is great news for South Australia. Not only will the ARTC increase its workforce in SA by creating more than 50 new jobs over the next three months, the SA based corporation will be responsible for managing the initial five year $1.3 billion investment programme to upgrade the NSW interstate and Hunter Valley rail lines,” he said.

“Today’s agreement will bring the majority of the interstate rail network under one jurisdiction for the purposes of management, maintenance and investment for the first time in Australia’s rail history.

“South Australia is at the crossroads of the interstate network, and it is fitting that we play a central role in the upgrade of the national rail network.”
