Canadians delight in Aussie bread

Bakers Delight is the latest Australian company to benefit from the Federal Government's push to double the number of Australian exporters, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Trade De-Anne Kelly said today.

" Bakers Delight has made their first foray into a major international market, and Canadians can't get enough of it. The company launched late last year under the name Cobs Breads and now has 10 stores open with plans to expand further ," Mrs Kelly said.

The well-known Australian bread chain opened their first bakery in

1980. Bakers Delight now has 640 franchises in Australia, 37 in New Zealand and combined sales of more than $400m per annum.

"The Federal Government, through Austrade, is committed to assisting Australian business like Bakers Delight to succeed in export, thereby creating jobs and boosting community wealth," Mrs Kelly said.

"Austrade Toronto provided Bakers Delight with expertise, local knowledge, invaluable contacts and market research on issues such as establishment and labour costs."

With his sights set firmly on the USA, fourth generation baker and owner of Bakers Delight Roger Gillespie is glad to have Austrade on his side.

Mr Gillespie said he looked at exporting because Bakers Delight was reaching the end of its growth potential in Australia. "Canada was an obvious choice, but we needed to do more research. You need to draw on the expertise of Austrade. You can't expect it to work right away," he said.

President of Cobs Bread in Canada, Braeden Lord, said Austrade Toronto played a pivotal role in the early stages. "Austrade introduced us to suppliers and consultants who helped us establish our stores and our image. The results have been fantastic. Canadians have taken to the bakeries, they identify with the friendly staff and love the freshness of our bread."

Austrade helps Australian businesses like Bakers Delight to tap directly into its extensive overseas network of 109 offices in 57 countries, assessing the on-the-ground intelligence regarding export opportunities.
