Howard Government Backflips On Central Coast Pipeline: Media Statement - 17th October 2007

The Liberal Party have today announced they no longer support the Missing Link pipeline on the NSW Central Coast.

John Howard cannot be trusted on water policy, and the decision to withdraw support for the vital Missing Link pipeline for the Central Coast betrays the 300,000 people who make up the growing local community.

On 25 May 2007 Kevin Rudd announced Labor’s support for the pipeline in a visit to the Central Coast.

Six days later, on 31 May, John Howard promised to fund the Missing Link pipeline, saying the pipeline between the Mardi and Mangrove Creek Dams was

“vital water infrastructure for the Central Coast community” that will “assist in the drought-proofing of the Central Coast”, and that “the construction of this pipeline will lift the financial burden from the Gosford City and the Wyong Shire Councils and importantly the ratepayers of the Central Coast”.

Today, the Liberal Member for Dobell, Ken Ticehurst has threatened to sink the missing link, breaking the Howard Government’s previous funding commitment.

The 22 km Missing Link pipeline will ensure the Central Coast will increase the catchment area for the region threefold - creating a water grid that will help secure water supplies for the Central Coast.

A Rudd Labor Government will fully fund the construction of the pipeline between the Mardi Dam and Mangrove Creek Dam, which will cost $80.3 million. Federal Labor supports practical, nation building projects to help deal with Australia’s water crisis in our towns and cities and has a plan to tackle climate change.
