New Chair for Australian Landcare Council

Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry Minister Warren Truss today announced the appointment of Roberta (Bobbie) Brazil as Chair of the Australian Landcare Council (ALC), the Australian Government's key advisory body on landcare and natural resource

management matters.

"Ms Brazil will be replacing Bruce Lloyd, who is retiring as Chair after eight years," Mr Truss said.

Mr Truss paid tribute to Mr Lloyd for his services to landcare and for his considerable efforts to promote sustainable and economically viable natural resource management in Australia.

"Mr Lloyd has raised the profile of landcare in Australia and overseas, and I thank him for his significant contribution to landcare activities," he said. "I and many others will miss his enthusiasm and dedication.

Mr Truss said Ms Brazil brings a substantial range of experience and expertise to the ALC, and that she is expected to make an important contribution to its effectiveness.

"Ms Brazil is currently Chair of Land and Water Australia. Ms Brazil is a lawyer and a partner with her husband in large-scale farming and pastoral businesses on Queensland's Darling Downs and in the Northern Territory," he said.

"She has an excellent understanding of catchment management and sustainable agriculture, and extensive experience on natural resource management and other bodies. She has played an active role in local landcare and catchment management groups and the Queensland Farmers' Federation, and has served as Queensland representative to the National Farmers' Federation's Environment Committee.

"Ms Brazil is a board member of the Condamine Alliance regional natural resource management body and has served as a community board member of the ALC since August 2000. She is a member of the Regional Womens Advisory Council, a member of

the Great Artesian Basin Advisory Council for Queensland, and Chair of the Land Use Research Centre Advisory Committee at the University of Southern Queensland.

"As a founding member of the Millmerran Landcare Group Ms Brazil also brings practical skills and experience, which will help ensure the ALC maintains its focus and direction, and continues to provide national leadership for the sustainable management of Australia's natural resources.

"Landcare is one of Australia's largest voluntary community movements. There are about 4000 landcare groups across Australia, with some 40 per cent of farmers involved.

"The ALC has a major role in advising the Government on priorities and strategies for natural resource management to achieve efficient, sustainable and equitable management of the country's natural resources," Mr Truss said.
