16 August 2005

QUALITY ASSURED FOR TOURISTS - TOUR GUIDES ACCREDITATION The Australian Government will fund the Guiding Organisations of Australia (GOA) to develop and implement a national tour guide accreditation framework, Minister for Small Business and Tourism, Fran Bailey announced today.

The funding was part of the multi-pronged effort to give tourists first-class products and services in Australia.

“The Australian Government is serious about protecting the valuable export earnings from our inbound tourism industry and, in particular, the high growth North Asian markets,” said Fran Bailey.

“The funding will mean the Australian tourism industry will have a national tour guide accreditation framework which will foster professional standards.”

“Professional tour guides can enhance a tourism experience for visitors, creating an appreciation of Australia, its social and cultural characteristics, its history and its unique natural beauty.”

“The North Asian market is forecast to grow by more than 30 per cent of total international tourism yield by 2014, with the China market to be our largest tourism export earner.  We want to ensure tourists receive ‘first-class ’ products and services from our tourism industry.”

“Australia ’s tourism industry is continuing to offer an exciting diversity of products and services for international and domestic tourists, this translates into the creation of jobs and increase in yield and dispersal.”

“The Australian Government has strongly invested in the future of the Australian tourism industry with a record level of investment of $453 million over the next three years.”
