  Media Release HO2/2002 - 25 January 2002

Newest Citizens for Victoria on Australia Day 2002

Almost 1,360 people are expected to become Australian citizens in ceremonies to be held in Victoria during the Australia Day period this year.

Twenty-two ceremonies will be held in Victoria at venues including Town Halls, Council Chambers, parks, a TAFE and by a lake. There will be ceremonies in Hobson's Bay, Dandenong, Whitehorse, Nillumbik, Booroondara and other cities and towns throughout Victoria.

Several of the citizenship ceremonies will be followed by affirmation ceremonies, inviting Australians to affirm their loyalty to our nation and welcome new citizens into our community.

Celebrations throughout Victoria will include bands, family entertainment, supper, an Aussie morning tea, a parade and a flag raising ceremony.

This year more than 8,100 candidates for citizenship will make their pledge as part of the Australia Day celebrations at ceremonies across the nation. Last year there were approximately 7,000 participants in citizenship ceremonies during the Australia Day period, with about 6,500 the year before.

Citizenship applications are approved under the direction of the Commonwealth Minister for Citizenship and Multicultural Affairs, Gary Hardgrave. However, the Minister authorises senior elected and appointed officials in Local Government (Mayors, Town Clerks etc) to confer citizenship and welcome new citizens as formal members of the Australian community. Most citizenship ceremonies are conducted by Local Government.
