Rudd 92% ‘Me Too’ on tax, says Brown

19th Oct 07

“When Kevin Rudd flew into Tasmania he said he was 100% behind John Howard on old growth logging, today he revealed that he is 92% behind John Howard on tax cuts,” Greens Leader Bob Brown said today.

“Kevin Rudd’s $31 billion tax cuts are a lost opportunity for Australia’s aged pensioners, teachers and environment,” Senator Bob Brown said.

“Labor and the Coalition are determined to be at the bottom of the class when it comes to tax rates but the Greens want Australia to be at the top of the class when it comes to education spending.”

“Australia needs to spend an extra $5 billion per year to bring our education spending up to the OECD average, but instead we are spending billions to lower our tax rates further,” Senator Brown said.

“In the last three years the Howard Government has announced $60 billion in income tax cuts. The tax cuts announced in the last week by John Howard and Kevin Rudd bring the total to nearly $100 billion.”

“Mr Howard and Mr Rudd have a vision for the tax system, but they have no real vision for Australia. We need to be investing in our schools, our teachers, public hospitals and climate change, not giving tax rebates for private school fees.”

“Kevin Rudd says his tax cuts are targeted at middle Australia, but he is providing cuts for people earning up to $180,000 per year. According to the Australian Tax Office less than 2 per cent of Australians earn more than $150,000 a year,” Senator Brown said.
