MEDIA RELEASE 15 December 2005

Member for Newcastle Sharon Grierson today awarded 40 individuals and teams for their outstanding contributions to sport in Newcastle.

At a ceremony at No.1 Sports Ground, Novocastrian sportspeople, administrators, coaches and organisations were recognised through the Commonwealth Sports Achievement Awards 2005.

Cheryl Salisbury, Matildas National Women’s Football Team Captain, was the special guest at the ceremony.

“Sport is one of the great institutions which binds our community together,” Ms Grierson said.

“Through these awards we not only recognise those who achieve outstanding results, but also those who contribute - often on a voluntary basis - to supporting the clubs, groups and organisations in our City.”

“It was wonderful to see both school children and older members of our community being recognised together, as well as teams in sports as diverse as netball, football, rowing, tae kwon do and aerobics.”

“I thank all the Award recipients for their contribution to the Newcastle community through sport, as well as all the organisations which nominated them and continue to support them.”
