$200,000 funding for Rest Area construction $200,000 funding will be provided for the construction of a truck pullover and rest area on the southbound lane of the F3 Highway near the John Renshaw Drive roundabout west of Newcastle, NSW Senator Sandy Macdonald announced today.

Senator Macdonald said that an area of the road shoulder had for some time, been unofficially used by truck drivers to rest or check their trucks before commencing their run to Sydney.

“This latest funding will be used to build a hard-stand area capable of withstanding the weight of trucks in all weather,” Senator Macdonald said.

“The facility will be able to accommodate three B-double vehicles in safety,” he said.

“This is part of an ongoing Federal Government strategy to provide rest areas and load checking facilities for all drivers at regular locations to improve safety on the National Highway network.”

“Street lighting will also be erected to serve the needs of the parking area.”

Senator Macdonald said driver fatigue is the principal cause of up to 20 percent of all fatal crashes.

“It is important also that drivers not just stop and rest, but also have the opportunity to check whether their load might have shifted during transit, which would affect the truck’s stability, cornering and other manoeuvring capabilities,” Senator Macdonald said.

Funding for the truck parking area is under the National Highway Safety and Urgent Minor Works program.
