Government invests in Men and their Families

13 May 2003

Thousands of men and their families will benefit from continued funding for the highly successful Men and Family Relationships and Family Relationship Education Programs.

Funding of $19.6 million will be provided over four years through the Men and Family Relationships Program to maintain men's services in rural, regional and metropolitan Australia. A further $5.5 million for the Family Relationships Education program will continue services in high need areas of rural and remote Australia.

Services will be funded to provide counselling and support to men assisting them to build and sustain positive relationships with their spouse, partner, ex-partner, children and step-children.

An independent evaluation of the Men and Family Relationships Program has found it to be a highly innovative and successful response by the Howard Government to the needs of men in the community.

Of those surveyed, 96% of men using a funded service rated it as good or very good with an impressive 99% of men saying they would recommend the service to other men.

Importantly, 93% of men surveyed reported they had made progress in dealing with the relationship issue that they sought to address.

The success of the program confirms that men are passionate about their family life and value the chance to acquire new skills in the right setting that can help them to become better husbands, fathers and partners.

Over the past five years, the Government has spent $22 million to assist more than 20,000 men to receive practical support and advice on ways to build stronger family relationships.

This continued funding recognises the effort and success of those men and the innovative approaches developed by services to assist them.
