MINISTER ANNOUNCES ANZAC DAY SCHOOLS’ AWARDS WINNERS

SCHOOLS from South Australia and Tasmania have won this year’s Anzac Day Schools’ Awards for their projects commemorating the service and sacrifice of our veterans over the past century.

Minister for Veterans’ Affairs Darren Chester congratulated Brooks High School in Tasmania for winning the national and state award for the second year in a row, with Playford McAuley Campus winning at the primary school level.

“The Brooks High School entry centred on its 2018 Anzac Day commemorative event based on the theme ‘those we left behind’, which considered the friends and family left behind as the soldiers went to war”, Mr Chester said.

“A highlight for the judges was that the event was clearly driven by the students themselves. Their entry considered the traditional aspects of Anzac Day, but also provided a thoughtful, respectful and considerate perspective, that included all parties affected by war.

Entries for the Anzac Day Schools’ Awards are open to all Australian primary and secondary schools, with each school eligible to submit one entry.

“The Awards are instrumental in ensuring students across the nation have an informed understanding of the service and sacrifice of our service men and women throughout history”, Mr Chester said.

“Through instilling respect for our wartime history and promoting the importance of Anzac Day for future generations, we will continue to honour those who have served our nation.”
