Press Release Ref: 433 Published: 17/7/2001 Title: $307,877 for Queanbeyan & Canberra’s migrant resource centre

Federal Member for Eden-Monaro, Gary Nairn, has announced that the Migrant Resource Centres of Queanbeyan and Canberra will receive Federal Government core funding of $307,887 for the period 1 July 2001 to 30 June 2002.

Migrant Resource Centres are autonomous organisations core funded by the Federal Department of Immigration and Multicultural Affairs.

"The Queanbeyan and Canberra Migrant Resource Centres work with the Department, volunteers and the community to facilitate the full participation in the community of people from different cultural and linguistic backgrounds and to maximise the benefits of cultural diversity for the community," said Mr Nairn.

The Migrant Resource Centre/Migrant Services Agencies network comprises 34 centres around Australia.

Overall core funding for the network in 2001/2002 will amount to $9.25 million. This core funding subsidises salary, and salary-related on-costs of core staff, rent/rates, operating costs, and some extraordinary expenditure, if appropriate.

"The Migrant Resource Centres of Queanbeyan and Canberra are greatly valued by the local community. The Federal Governments continued funding of the centres shows its dedication to further enhancing multiculturalism," concluded Mr Nairn.
