Hanson-Young backs down from sexual harassment claims

Liberal Democrats Senator David Leyonhjelm has congratulated Greens Senator Sarah Hanson-Young on following through with repeated threats of legal action that have dragged on for more than a month, by finally filing a Statement of Claim.

However, Senator Leyonhjelm said he was surprised, that the Claim he received on August 1 makes no reference to what Senator Hanson-Young has been bitterly grousing about throughout dry July.

“For weeks now the country has endured relentless coverage of a tearful Senator Hanson-Young claiming I “slut-shamed” her (her term, not mine) and that my behaviour amounted to workplace sexual harassment,” Senator Leyonhjelm said.

“She and her supporters have to date raised more than $60,000, pledging to use the funds to advance the cause of the sisterhood by fighting intimidation, bullying and ‘sexist slurs on my professional reputation’ through court action.

“Yet the Statement of Claim I received yesterday contains not such allegations. Instead it is a tepid whinge that I have insinuated she is a hypocrite and a misandrist.

“It is most perplexing that the false allegations she has consistently made against me - that I publicly called into question her sexual behaviour and, as her lawyers so eloquently put in in their Concerns Notice dated July 4 2018, portrayed her as ‘a slut, shagging men indiscriminately’ - have now vanished.

“I am now calling on Senator Hanson-Young to come clean to the sisterhood she claims to be fighting for and inform her supporters that their money is being used to fund a personal political vendetta that has absolutely nothing to do with workplace sexual harassment, sexual discrimination or the #metoo movement.”

Senator Leyonhjelm has engaged Senior Counsel and is confident Senator Hanson-Young’s claims are without merit. He will be defending the claims strenuously in the Federal Court and will be seeking costs accordingly.
