MEDIA RELEASE The Hon. Bruce Billson, MP Minister Assisting the Minister for Defence MINASSIST 033/2007 Wednesday, 11 July 2007 INDUSTRY HAS STRONG VOICE ON DEFENCE AND INDUSTRY POLICY STEERING COMMITTEE Former chairman of the Australian Industry Group Defence Council Lucio Di Bartolomeo has accepted the position of industry representative on the steering committee created to oversee the implementation of the Defence and Industry Policy Statement. Minister Assisting the Minister for Defence Bruce Billson said the Executive Steering Committee first met last month, following the release of the industry policy statement by Defence Minister Dr Brendan Nelson in March. “The steering committee will oversee the implementation of the new policy, allocate resources within key Defence stakeholder areas to undertake implementation activities and provide advice to the Defence Ministerial Team on implementation issues,” Mr Billson said. The Committee is chaired by the Chief Executive Officer of the Defence Materiel Organisation Dr Stephen Gumley and features representatives from key stakeholder organisations from Defence and Defence Industry. Mr Di Bartolomeo, as industry representative, brings extensive defence industry experience to the role and will ensure that industry issues and concerns are addressed as part of the policy implementation process. The former chief executive of ADI, now Thales Australia, is also the current Australian Industry Group NSW branch president and an AIG national vice president. The Defence representatives comprise the Heads of the Capability Development Executive, Defence Science and Technology Organisation, Defence Support Group and Chief Information Officer Group. “The new Policy Statement contains nine key strategies and 39 initiatives designed to optimise the level of industry support to ADF operational capability, and to create a level playing field for Australian Industry to compete and win work, on a best value for money basis,” Mr Billson said. “Significant work has already been taken on implementing the new policy initiatives, which include the creation of a Defence Export Unit, a new Defence Industry Advisory Council, an Australian Industry Capability Manual, procurement reforms and Increased Small to Medium Enterprise involvement in the Government’s Skilling Australia’s Defence Industry program.” The creation of the Executive Steering Committee will provide for a whole-of-Defence approach to policy implementation and ensure that the benefits of the new policy initiatives are delivered in a timely and effective manner.
