Media Release The Hon David Hawker MP Speaker of the House of Representatives Federal Member for Wannon

11 May 2006

Federal Member for Wannon, David Hawker, today announced that Portland Airport will receive more than $39,900 from the Australian Government’s $35 million Regional Airport Funding Program to upgrade its security infrastructure.

Mr Hawker said the Australian Government was determined to do all it could to protect the security of Australia’s aviation industry.

“That protection extends to the many people and businesses that rely on Portland Airport for transport services,” Mr Hawker said.

Portland Airport became a security-controlled airport on 10 March 2005. It is one of 147 regional airports that are now required to have a transport security program approved by the Australian Government to strengthen aviation security around the country.

Mr Hawker said transport security programs were tailored to local conditions and this funding would help Portland Airport increase and improve security measures, such as fencing, lighting and security signage.

Basic security upgrades at Portland Airport will include installing:

• Floodlighting; • security fencing; and • security signage.

“The Australian Government recognises the importance of aviation to regional communities such as Portland, and this security upgrade will ensure that services are not only accessible but also much safer,” Mr Hawker said.

The Australian Airports Association has worked closely with the Australian Government to negotiate the funding arrangements for Portland Airport.
