JENNY MACKLIN’S DECISION NOT TO CONTEST NEXT ELECTION

It has been an honour and privilege to serve alongside Jenny Macklin, the Shadow Minister for Families and Social Services and we are deeply saddened by her decision not to contest the next election.

We would like to extend our best wishes to Jenny, and thank her for all of her tireless efforts in the Parliament, in her various portfolio positions, including her leadership within the Australian Labor Party.

All those that have been fortunate enough to have met Jenny know of her passion for the issues and for the people that she served. Jenny has been a champion of disability services, working as the minister responsible for the introduction of the NDIS.

She was a key minister in the Rudd and Gillard Governments, when it delivered the Apology to the Stolen Generations, developed the Closing the Gap Framework and the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse.

People that have been fortunate enough to have met Jenny know the incredible mark that she made as the minister responsible for the introduction of the NDIS and as the first female Deputy Leader of the Labor Party.

They know that it is because of her efforts, that we have had two female deputy leaders since, and that she has been an incredible mentor for so many women.

We would like to extend our warm thanks to Jenny for fighting against the Turnbull Government’s cuts to Australia’s most vulnerable and for fighting strongly against its attempt to raise the pension age to the highest in the developed world.

Finally, we would like to thank Jenny for her mentorship and friendship. We are incredibly grateful for her work and dedication. Jenny leaves a tremendous legacy and

her remarkable efforts will be sorely missed.

Thank you Jenny for all of the work you have undertaken over the past 22 years. We wish her and her family all the best in the next chapter of their lives.
